What are treatment options for people with marijuana use disorder?

The most common treatment for marijuana use disorder is talk therapy.

Talk therapy includes methods like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET), and Contingency Management (CM). For teenagers, Multidimensional Family Therapy (MDFT) is another effective option. Most people with marijuana use disorder can benefit from outpatient treatment only. Detox, inpatient rehabilitation, and residential treatment are typically not recommended for people with a primary marijuana use disorder. However, use of these services may be recommended if they also have another substance use disorder. Currently, there are no FDA-approved medications to treat marijuana use disorder.
