Most people who use marijuana do not develop an addiction. Also, rates of addiction among people who use marijuana are significantly lower compared to other drugs. In 2023, it was estimated that 61.8 million people used a marijuana product in the past year, and less than a third met the criteria for a cannabis use disorder. A person only meets the criteria for a substance use disorder if, over several months, they continue to use a drug repeatedly despite experiencing numerous harms and negative consequences.
