New York DanceSafe Volunteers to Host Free “Surviving Zoo” Event to Give Out Drug Information and Drug Checking Kits

NEW YORK, NY – On Thursday, August 28 from 8 p.m. until 10 p.m., members of New York’s DanceSafe chapter will host a free evening of harm reduction preparation called “Surviving Zoo” for this upcoming weekend’s three-day Electric Zoo music festival. Volunteers from New York’s DanceSafe chapter will give away free gift bags containing drug information cards, earplugs and condoms. They will also have personal drug checking kits for sale that allow for individuals to test for adulterants in most illicit substances.  The event will take place at the Center of Remembering and Sharing on the 2nd Floor, located at 123 4th Ave. between East 12th Street and East 13th Street.

After two young people died as a result of drug use at the 2013 Electric Zoo, the festival has mostly focused on adding law enforcement and making an anti-drug PSA mandatory viewing.  DanceSafe believes that providing information about how to reduce the harms of drug use is the better approach.  Although DanceSafe will not be allowed onsite at Electric Zoo they have put this event together in order to offer their services to the community.

Drug Policy Alliance proudly supports the New York DanceSafe chapter and its efforts to make sure young people have access to accurate, fact-based drug information and other harm reduction services.
