June 17th, 2021 marks 50 years since President Nixon declared the “War on Drugs,” stating that drug abuse was “public enemy number one.” In the half century since Nixon’s deceptive declaration and the enactment of the Controlled Substances Act, the drug war has become deeply embedded in our federal laws and policies. 

Now is the time to refocus our nation’s approach to drug use and possession. On this 50th anniversary of the drug war, President Biden must make good on his campaign promises and take steps to dismantle this rotten system.
