Today in Trenton, Governor Phil Murphy held a press conference on the social justice impact of adult-use marijuana legalization and record expungement. The New Jersey Legislature is expected to vote Monday on a bill to legalize, tax, and regulate marijuana for adults 21 years and older. If the bill passes, New Jersey would become the second state to legalize marijuana through the legislature.
Roseanne Scotti, New Jersey State Director for DPA, spoke at the press conference about what legalization and expungement could mean to the people of New Jersey:
"More than 32,000 people are arrested every year in the state of New Jersey for marijuana possession alone. This derails their lives and imperils their futures. These individuals are our families, our friends, and our neighbors. If this legislation passes on Monday, these unjust arrests will be a thing of the past."
