2018 International Overdose Awareness Day March in NYC

On Friday, August 31, 2018, Drug Policy Alliance NY joined VOCAL for an Overdose Awareness Day March to NY Governor Andrew Cuomo's office in Downtown Manhattan.

Activists and family members who have lost loved ones to overdose united to raise their voices in a call for the governor to take action on the overdose crisis. The march, which convened at the New York City Morgue, attracted hundreds of participants armed with pictures and stories of their loved ones.

The march was part of a series of four events taking place throughout New York State this month organized by End Overdose NY, a coalition in which DPA is a member.

Amid the seventh straight year of increased overdose deaths in New York City - 2017 being the deadliest year on record - marchers demanded evidence-based public health interventions to end the crisis, including statewide funding for naloxone, medication-assisted treatment in prisons and jails, ensuring buprenorphine in all hospitals, and the implementation of Overdose Prevention Centers.
