Change in New Mexico
Tuesday, January 20, 2009

Reena 60x85Today we usher in a new administration. But we don't have to wait for change at the federal level.  We can begin right here, right now.

Today we begin a fight for compassionate drug policies on the opening day of the New Mexico legislative session. You can help create the change you want to see in New Mexico by becoming a member of DPAgetting involved as an advocate or donating to DPA.

As you know, our state is in a fiscal crisis. Now is the time to embrace treatment instead of incarceration to save the state millions. Now is the time to pass a host of legislative measures that will save lives and save money.

Please give today. Your hard work has achieved much success over the past few years, and I am committed to making this legislative session the biggest yet for drug policy reform. With your dedication and support both as advocates and donors, I know that New Mexico can lead the nation in compassionate and fair drug policies.

Over the next 60 days, I will keep you updated on ways that you can get involved in the legislative session. Only by raising our voices can we reform our state’s drug policies. We can do it, together.

With gratitude,

Reena Szczepanski
Director
Drug Policy Alliance New Mexico

P.S. Want to know more about our bills? We are the state's leading organization fighting to make our drug laws more compassionate and more sensible. Our ambitious legislative agenda proposes a variety of measures. You can check out our full agenda on our website, including a full slate of proposals addressing treatment for heroin users and for pregnant women, racial profiling and measures to help people with convictions regain the right to vote and to help them get jobs. We'll also be convening a statewide taskforce to examine the costs of our current drug policies and create recommendations for change.
